Robert Zane Lewis, 86

EATON, IN

Robert Zane Lewis passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at IU Ball Memorial Hospital.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Janet D. Lewis, his parents Lulu Steffey and Oz Lewis, one brother Wendell Lewis and two sisters, Lucille Edwards and Wilma Carder.

Bob was born in Eaton, Indiana on October 9, 1924. He lived his entire life in Eaton where he and his wife raised their family. Bob graduated from Eaton High School in 1943. He and Janet were married January 15, 1948 and were married for sixty-three years. Bob worked for Borg Warner Corporation (Warner Gear) from the late 1940s retiring in 1980. He also for many years worked another job at Eddie’s Antennaes. After retiring Bob worked several places before working for many years at G.W. Bartlett Corporation. In addition to his love of reading and fishing, Bob had a deep love for his gardening and the outdoors. Bob was a life long member of the United Methodist Church, the UAW and the American Legion in Muncie.

Bob was a purple heart recipient having been in a PBY (Catalina) which crashed in the Atlantic off the east coast of the U.S. while searching for German submarines. He sustained broken bones and teeth and recuperated for a time in a hospital in Puerto Rico which was visited by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. He was returning by train to active duty after attending the funeral of his brother Wendell who was killed on Okinawa when the war ended. He left the Naval Aviation division of the Navy as an Aerial Gunners Mate 3rd Class.

Bob was, as his wife Janet very patriotic and proud to have served his country. He was currently very concerned about the loss of life in the helicopter crash in Afghanistan as well as the deaths and woundings of all our brave men and women in the military. He was a proud, lifetime Democrat and was sometimes active in primary and national elections at the local level. He worked as a poll worker at Eaton along with Janet for many years. He always wore his WWII Veteran baseball cap or his WWII U.S. Navy Veteran cap, even in the hospital. He would probably not be recognized without it on because he wore it at all times except when sleeping. He deeply appreciated the words of thanks he often received from citizens when he crossed their path.

Bob was a kind, generous, caring, hard-working husband, father, and friend. He was loved by anyone who talked with him even for a few minutes.

He is survived by his children: Kathy Bartlett (Gary), Muncie, Peggy Constant (Jay), Selma, Robert W. Lewis (Anne) Alexandria, Virginia and Theodore J. Lewis (Beth) Carmel.
