Mary L. (Spangler) Taylor, 87

HARTFORD CITY, IN

MARY L. (SPANGLER) TAYLOR, 87, passed away Thursday morning December 24, 2009, at her home.

The daughter of Edward and Mary Etta (Talbert) Spangler, she was born November 20, 1922, in Daleville, Indiana. Mary was a graduate of Daleville High School, class of 1940, and obtained her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Speech and Hearing Therapy from Ball State University. She married Donald C. Taylor on February 1, 1947.

A teacher for 25 years, Mary taught in Anderson for one year before starting the Speech and Hearing Program for Blackford Community Schools. She was a charter member of the Daleville Eastern Star, attended the Eaton United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. Mary enjoyed ballroom dancing, reading, quilting, traveling, and following her grandchildren’s activities.

In addition to her husband of 63 years, Donald C. Taylor, she is survived by two daughters, Linda (Tom) Smelser, Indianapolis, and Cinda Taylor, Goshen, three sisters: Marcella Marlett Hollis, Muncie, Charlotte Costerison, Anderson, and Naomi Reese, Ft. Wayne, two grandsons, Brandon Smelser, Indianapolis, and Michael (Shelly) Smelser, Walnut Creek, CA, one granddaughter, Michelle Smelser (partner, Russel Cloncs), Sebastapol, CA, a great-grandson, Austin Smelser, Indianapolis, two sisters-in-law, Hannah Taylor, Warren, and Harriett Spangler (Wilson) Roberts, Anderson, and a son-in-law, Jim (Marty) Perkins, Muncie, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Susan Perkins, one sister, Crevia Reed, eight brothers: George, John, Clarence, Elmer, Walter, Clifford, Clark, and Arthur Spangler.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 29, 2009, in the Pitman-Richman Funeral Home, 200 S. Hartford St., Eaton, with Pastor Keith Williams presiding. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, December 28, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services Tuesday. Eastern Star services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
